My Music Magazine Contents Page

For my Music magazine contents page , ive kept it quite short and simple, making it easy to read and not overwhelming with text. One of the ways ive done this is dividing the page into two shown by the white line. I have also included images which help break up the amount of text.

I have placed the name of the magazine on the top centre of the page , using the same style and size font as the front cover, which creates a brand image for itself and keeps reminding the readers that its a Back To Beatsix magazine, which gives them familiarised with  the name.
I have kept in with the same colour scheme as i used for the front cover which was black, white and red. This also gives a clean and basic colour scheme to the contents page and the whole magazine, by suing the same colours throughout.

I have included album cover of bands and artist's such as The Black Eyed Peas and Lana Del Rey. This shows the variety in musicians that my magazine has to show as they both sing and perform in completely different styles and genres of music, which shows that the magazine appeals to the majority of people by not sticking to a specific genre of music. By showing the album covers , it will encourage the reader to go out and buy it.
I have also used live taken photos of Florence and the Machine, and Kasabian. This creates a more real and journalist feel to the contents page which will appeal to some readers. Also as their is no text written about them , only the page number, will interest and encourage readers to turn to the page to see what is written about them. By having the Page number in large font and against the red box, makes them stand out on the contents page , drawing attention to both the page number and the image.

The image in the top left corner is one of the focus points. Ive tried to show this by having it larger then any of the others but also suing the same model as the front cover , relating it to the exclusive interview that it said about on the front. By it being the largest image, it suggests to the audience the most important thing in the magazine will be about her. For the image i used a close up shot , facing straight on which gived the model direct i contact with the audience. Also she is positioned with a rose in her mouth which is strange but yet quirky and fun. This shows she doesn't take her self to seriously and just enjoys having a laugh which makes the audience feel she is relate able.

Another focus point would be the article "Top 50 Downloaded Songs of 2011". It really pops out of the page by the size font i used and using white coloured text against a black background. Also by having 50 and 2001 in larger font then the rest of the text, it suggests their important and emphasises the number making it seem bigger then it actually is.

Overall i am really pleased with the overall layout ,appearance and outcome of my contents page. Ive stuck with the same colour scheme thought out , linking it back to the front cover and used similar images that link with each other as well. The layout and structure is simple yet effective , as it guides the reader to each page and the text is crisp and clear. It gets straight to the point and doesn't babble on , which again will appeal to the reader.

My music Magazine

My music magazine is called " Back to Beatsix". I came up with the name as it sounds similar to "Back to Basics " but the Beatsix referred to music which my magazine is based on. The title and name of the magazine is on the top centre of the magazine where it would  stand out on the shelves. The white text against the black background makes it stand out of the page and makes a bold statement. The size and style of font helps this as i used Elephant serif style font which makes it bold and strong.  The layout is basic in its appearance and colour scheme. The predominate colours are red, white and black , which are similar to that of Q magazine.
I used my own original photography for the image in the centre of the page, which is also one of the focus points on the page along with the title. I tried to display it as an album cover by having the name of the artist and the name of the album on it. I felt the image related to the name of the album as the girl is trapped in netting but she is being let loose by releasing her first album, hence why its called unleashed. for this i used a close up shot , which focuses mainly on her face. i used high key lighting coming from the left which highlights her face and hair.  The image is striking and engaging as she is making direct eye contact with the audience which will draw them into the magazine. Her body language and presence is interesting to look at as her facial expression is inviting and slightly seductive. Her red hair is striking which i exaggerated slightly using photo shop but it also fits in with the colour scheme of the magazine. However if i could improve on the image , it would be to make it larger and have it over the whole of the magazine with the text over it , like most typical magazine, also i think i would have a Little bit more text , so that it is abit more informative for the audience , as i have substituted this by making the text in larger font size.

The text around the image is smaller than the title so it doesn;t take away from either of the two focus points of the front cover. Ive used words such as " Exclusive" which the reader will be interested in and will leave them wanting to know more. For this i also displayed it in a large bold font so that it stands out on the page.
also by having some word such as " MASSIVE REVIEW ISSUE" makes them look important , so the reader feels they need to read it .
I have included articles with the black eyed peas as they are currently the number one band in the world and are actually touring at the moment. By having a well known and famous artist name or image on the front cover, will get people to read the magazine.
I have shown other articles on the front cover e.g. " TOP 50 DOWNLOADED SONGS OF 2011". This is in block capitals and huge size font which really makes it pop out of the page. Also i have purposely made "TOP 50" in larger font as it makes it look important but it also makes 50 look like a huge big number, which people will be interested in . Also i think by having this article , it will persuade people to buy the magazine to see what are the top 50 downloaded songs and if they are up to date with the latest and coolest music of the year.
As i am doing a music magazine i thought that i could incorporate some sort of information of up coming performances by certain bands and artists. So i have included a line up page for the two biggest festivals in the country , Reading and V-Festival.  Here people can see what bands are performing over the weekend
period . This will definitely encourage people to buy the magazine as it makes them feel special being the first to see the line up and to see if their favourite band or artist is playing there.
Oerall i am pleased with the outcome of my music magazine front cover and the layout of it. There are areas where i think i could improve on and  if i could start again , such as enlarging the central image to cover the whole of the magazine, and maybe desizing the text so its not so much in your face and loud.

Q contents

Again i looked and analysed and contents page form Q music magazine. The contents page consists of 3 prime colours, red, white and black. Each are used for different purposes and are asscocitaed with the magazine itself. The red is used as as border , to topic and number the text and articles without it looking crammed. This allows it to be readable at a much faster pace.
The black is used to inform the audience of basic information.
The white is used in the background which allows the different coloured text's to stand out against each other therefore allowing information not to be missed.

The pictures represent to the audience the main articles in the magazine without reading it. It allows them to gain quick knowledge of other features . Also it suggests the larger the image the more important it is , which will interest the reader.
In both Q magazine and NME , there is a mixture of posed and live, black and white photography. This gives it a more journalist feel and makes it more visually interesting. The photography also makes it easier to identify which artist is which by the angle shot used and quality of the images.

The pronounced use of " subscribe today " is a sly yet effective way of persuading people to get the magazine on a regular occasion.
the images used on the content page feature a variety of artists , making the magazine and even greater prospect as the audience will feel more engaged and want to read the magazine more, by showing bands like Foo Fighters of the content.

In the bottom corner , it instantly  informs the audience of the page which they are currently viewing. The typography of this text allows it to stand out and connotes its importance.

The shot in the middle is shot suing a mid shot , face on angle shot, focusing on her top half of her body. Whats draws you are the contrasting colours of her gold sequined dress and red statement making hair.
The main focus of this contents page , is the photo of Florence Welsh from " Florence and the Machine". Although there is no text about her or article about her, she is still the focus point which will lead readers into Turing to page 96 to see what is written about how, leaving the reader wanting to know more.

Q front cover

I decided to analyse a front cover of a music magazine to get inspiration and ideas for when i make my own. I looked at two , one from NME and the other Q. I particularly liked Q as the front cover used bold and colourful imagery which featured one of my favourite bands , Coldplay. The letter Q is easily recognisable and is associated with the music magazine. The white text against the red background makes it very bold and makes it standout on the shelves. Q itself stands for Queiten Richardson who is the maker of the magazine.

The anchorage text links the central image to the topics of the article. The central image suggests that the main article will be about chris martin as he is th onely person on the front cover , also they have shown this by having all the text on the outside of the image which drwas attention to it.
By showing on the front cover that their will be a exclusive interview with a celebrity married couple , makes the reader feel they are bonding with the rich and famous. . This interests both msuic lovers and readers who are interested in the private life of public figures.

The magzine Q is targeted towards a mass stream audience , as each issue varies in genres of msuic so it doesnt stay aimed at one spcific audience taste in music. unlike other magazine e.g " Kerrang"  who have genres of rock/ heavy metal. By doing this Q gain a larger mass audience as it appeals to a wider range of people.

Intertextuality is interesting and makes the audience feel their up to date with the newest and latest music. The way the text is placed in connotes to the audinece as though the text is rare which is emphasised via the colouring and style and shape of the text and background.

They have used a longshot which exposes his whole body and drwas immediate attention to him as he takes up the most of the page. they have also edited th eimage by using photoshop to increase the colour intensity and adjust any imperfections. His outfit works well with the background creating a radiant and colourfull front cover which will stand out on the shelf.

School Magazine Double page spread

I decided to analyse this double page spread by Sibford school because i thought it was a good double page spread, clear to read, nice pictures, simple and sophisticated. This would interest parents in particular as it talks about the school and about children's education .
The double page spread itself , doesn't have alot of text which. An advantage of this could be that it simpler and quicker to read , which could interest some people to read it because of its lack of texts and will take shorter amount of time. A disadvantage of using very little text would be that parents who want to know more about the school , wont receive much information and may feel that its not very informative. It uses large pictures to break up the text and to make the double page spread more appealing and interesting to look at. The pictures are high quality ,and shows parents what it is there children will learn and images of pupils participating in school sports and other events. This is good for the school name and image as it shows the schools academic and sporting achievements and pupils representing the school. The shots that are used are also good quality as they use a variety of different shots and use different angles which engage the audience attetntion as there not all the same and capture differnt moments and activities that the pupils are doing which will interst parents who are interested in the school.
The colours used are mostly green which represents Harmony, Safety and Money. It's colour which relates to money could refer back to the school, as it is a private boarding school and the fact that there school colour is green along with the school uniforms. Also green is an earth colour and could relate to the fact the school is in the counrty side, which relates to safety and its in non urban area where it is quiet and peacefull. This will please parents and other audiences to know that there children would be safe and out of reach of busy roads and city's. Overall i think this double page spread could be more informative but is very visually engaging and interesting and offers a range of images which shows what the school has to offer.

School Magazine contents page

For my contents page i will use an image from the recycle fashion show and have the articles and news based around the image. I looked at other magazines to compare how they organise their contents and the placements of the text and imagery. As both of the school magazines i analysed for this project " King Edward VI and FFH" don't have contents pages i decided to look at a college magazine instead.
As you can see the contents information is placed in the middle so that it becomes the main focus of the page and the reader gives it immediate attention. It is made clear that this page is a contents page by the large font title in front of the black background block. This then follows a subtitle which divides the contents of the magazine into sections about particular topics, this makes it easier to locate specific information quickly instead of reading through each and every topic within a list. They have used large font sized for the numbers of the pages so that it is clear for readers to see and so they don't mistake turning to the wrong page. They have also used images to describe a topic rather than using text, this gives the contents variety and breaks up the amount of text. It also gives the contents page some variety for the reader who will find everything more  interesting and will want to read the magazine. Some of the images are larger than others, this shows particular importance about a topic. The two colourful images either side of the contents page is irrelevant to the whole topic of the magazine but are used for effect and to make the content page look more attractive.  Also the background used is plain white , which allows all of the information on the page to stand out and clearer to read and see.

My School Magazine

My magazine is by Savannah College of Art & Design and is called "Inspire". I decided on this name for the magazine as i thought it is an art school, and pupils are encouraged to be creative and be inspired by there surroundings and other artist's work and it relates to art. I thought the name was short and simple and got straight to the point. The font i will use is Monotype Corsiva. This is because i think it flows very nicely on the front cover of the magazine and will compliment with the photo of the front cover , giving a elegant and girl appearance . Also its very sophisticated and has a lot of curves to the lettering which is quite artistic like. I will have the name of the magazine on the top centre of my front cover. This will make it noticeable and stand out but not take away from the photo on the cover . Also i think by having a strong yet simple title that appeals to people, will make it attract  to people and lead them into buying it.Other magazines that have done this are ELLE which is french for She , this is a good name for the magazine as it is short and simple but easily recognisable. Also the word ELLE refers to the target audience that it's magazine is aimed for which is women .
The font style they used is very strong and bold and really stands out on the front cover of the magazine which is what you want in order to grab peoples attention. For the colour of my font i will be using red or black which will compliment the front cover photo and will give a sophisticated, elegant look. It will also make the font stand out clearly and will make a bold statement on the front cover.
For my front cover i have a photo image of the schools recycle fashion show which also features the image of the girl who won it. This gives a glimpse of what there is to offer in the magazine and will attract those who art both interested in art or fashion.
